What does "gauge" mean?
Gauge refers to the thickness of either the pipe wall for both chainlink and ornamental fences or the thickness of the wire for chainlink mesh. The thicker the pipe or wire wall, the smaller the gauge. For example, 16 gauge pipe is thicker than 17 gauge and 9 gauge wire is thicker than 11 gauge.
In reality, when talking about chain link mesh, GAUGE MEANS NOTHING! Why? Because what is 11 gauge chainlink mesh to one company, may not be the same to another. And, it seems that every year the wire gets thinner but the gauge remains the same. The following chart contains gauge conversions into inches. A wire gauge has a tolerance of approximately plus or minus 0.004 inches so we also included the minumum thickness that wire should be for the respective gauge
Don't be deceived
There are a number of things that you can do to protect yourself against dishonest contractors (although we wish it weren't so, there are a few of them out there). The first, and most important thing you can do is get educated about the product you are buying - and that is why we offer this web site. Browse this site and you will learn everything you need to have a good experience buying a fence. Most dishonest contractors take advantage of the customers lack of knowledge.
Not all fences that look the same are the same. ChainLink and Ornamental fences come in many different shapes and sizes. For example, the galvanized steel pipe used to construct a fence range from 1 3/8 inches to 6 5/8 inches in diameter. Additionally, the wall thickness of the pipe ranges from 0.055 inches (17 gauge) to 0.28 inches. Consequently, you could have two fences that look identical (with the same diameter pipe) yet be very different in terms of strength (different wall sizes). Because of this, there have been a few instances where a dishonest fence contractor has taken advantage of an unsuspecting customer.
Is it true that chain link devalues a property more than wood?
Just to clarify, adding a fence to your property adds value whether it is wood or chain link. As far a chain link adding less value than wood, that idea is completely unfounded. We install wood, chain link, ornamental and vinyl fences, and more and more people are putting up maintenance-free fences (chain link, ornamental or vinyl) because they don't want to have to mess around with the fence for the rest of their lives. When someone buys a house with a wood fence around it, they are also making a commitment to maintain it... and that is something many people are not willing to do any more because there are better alternatives available (and those alternatives also come with warranties). If you want our expert opinion, no-maintenance fences add more value to your property than wood fences. And we can say that just because of the trends we are seeing in our own business and in the fencing industry in general. Wood fences are really becoming a thing of the past.
